Serbia is the ideal destination for anyone looking for an adventurous holiday, without any long-haul flights, and a love of meeting the locals. You get a real feeling of being in an exotic location, where the tectonic plates of Islam, Orthodox Christianity, and Roman Catholicism, alongside socialism and capitalism, have all collided in the past.

NIŠ FORTESS

We begin our excursion by meeting in front of the Niš Fortress, the Symbol of Niš, located on the right bank of Nišava River. The fortress has been under government protection since May 1948, and was declared an immovable cultural heritage as a cultural monument of great importance by the Serbian Parliament in April 1979. We will walk its paths and get to know the stories hiding within its centuries old walls.

BANOVINA - KING MILAN SQUARE

We continue the tour with visiting the Banovina building, crossing the bridge over the Nišava River (the River of Fairies), listening to the legend of how the city got its name, finally coming to the city’s center and main square – King Milan Square and the Monument to Liberators of Niš.

SYNAGOGUE AND MOSQUE

Within a few minutes’ walk we go to the Jewish Synagogue, which today belongs to the National Museum of Niš and merely represents an exhibition gallery. Next, we continue to the Mosque – founded by Islam Aga Hajdarević, built in 1870, adding on to the foundations of an older, damaged Mosque. It represents the last Ottoman public building built in Niš.

CATHOLIC CHURCH - CATHEDRAL

We continue our tour to King Alexander Square, where there are five monuments, two of which are dedicated to the Liberation Struggle. The central green area houses the monument to the King Alexander and the graves of Soviet Soldiers. We continue to a locomotive called ,,Baba Milka“ from the Jelašnica mine, and to the Catholic Church of the Exaltation of the Holly Cross in Niš, built after the liberation from the Ottoman Empire in 1884. After the tour, we go to the Orthodox Cathedral Church, occupying a significant place amongst Orthodox believers and in the history of Serbian art.

KAZANDŽSIJSKO SOKAČE – TINKERS ALLEY / COPPERSMITH ALLEY

Later we take a stroll to the Stevan Sremac and Kalča monument, located at the entrance of the Tinkers Alley. This monument is dedicated to Stevan Sremac, a Serbian novelist of the late XIX century novels and his friend Kalča, who is also a protagonist in Sremac’s novel Ivkova Slava. We continue our walk along this historical street, the last preserved street of the Old Niš (Čaršija). Afterwards there will be free time for taking pictures and enjoying coffee, drinks, lunch and cakes at some of the many beautiful cafes in the ally.

OBRENOVIĆEVA STREET - NATIONAL MUSEUM

Afterwards, we will take a short stroll along the pedestrian street, called Obrenovićeva Street, or Pobedina Street. This street represents the “soul” of the city, as they say. The main pedestrian zone of the city is well-known for its many cafes, shops, bakeries and pastry shops. Obrenovićeva street is also a home of the largest and most modern shopping centers in the city Forum Shopping Center, located right across the Kalča Shopping Mall. Nearby is the National Museum which preserves the treasures of this city and its surroundings.
